WHAT BRISTLES MY BEARD - EPISODE 5

If you’ve read my previous gems, you may have noticed that I have strong opinions on many things, but few things bakes my beans as much as society bashing law enforcement while painting them with broad generalizations. I’ve often been quite curious as to why people have these negative views towards policing, but after much analyzing I’ve come to a simple conclusion; I couldn’t give a rat’s ass anymore.

Man with bristly beard

I’ve yet to have been presented with a logical argument that would make me sharpen my pitchfork, wave it angrily over my head, while standing outside the police station and yelling singular syllable words like “Pig!”. As someone who has worked in construction for almost 15 years, I can’t even guess how many arguments or discussions I’ve had about this, let alone the amount of highly informative conversations I’ve overhead from the “Jailbird Johnnys” of the world.

On the subject of broad generalizations (this is a self-aware form of irony here); I’ve broken down cop haters into 5 types:

  • Criminals

  • Misinformed

  • People who feel they’ve been racially targeted

  • People who failed to become cops

  • People who believe what others have said about cops

I don’t doubt that some people may have had some terrible or unforgettable interactions with police based on the racial/prejudices of said officers. This does not, however, mean that all the boys in blue are racist or prejudice. Whatever negative interaction some people may have faced doesn’t make it fact that all or most cops are bad people.

But let’s face it, statistically, if you’ve ever had a negative interaction with police, it’s most likely due to the fact that you did something idiotic and were held accountable for your indiscretions. Maybe you’ve listened to too much N.W.A. Maybe you just hate structure. But I’ll tell you this, I don’t know any highly successful individuals, who are active in their communities, which have a hate on for those that protect and serve.

I will always advocate for the changing of views with respect to police officers. They perform a duty, a service, and a commitment that I would never want. I’d never want to live in a world without cops. London would basically turn into Windsor overnight, yep, let that sink in…

To our officers that are reading this as representatives of DCL, and to those that aren’t, I want to thank you for all that you do. I believe you possess a moral compass that many of us don’t. For every smart ass comment you hear, for every cell phone waved in your face, and for every scum bag that accuses you of performing lazy police work during a random check, just know that there are just as many that hold you on a pedestal right where your sacrifices dictate you should be.
